The Villages
Our Mission and Vision:
The Villages champions every child's right to a safe, permanent and nurturing home. We are committed to strengthening all families and embracing the dignity and diversity of every child, youth and family. The Villages, Indiana's largest not-for-profit child and family services agency, serves over 1,200 children and their families each day. Our vision is that every child will flourish in a healthy, nurturing, self-sufficient family.
Our History:
The Villages traces its roots to the late Dr. Karl Menninger, who founded the nation's first psychoanalytic hospital. In the 1960s, Menninger established homes for neglected youth in Kansas, Indiana and Michigan, and was an outspoken advocate battling child abuse.
The Villages of Indiana, Inc. was first established in 1978 by a Lilly Endowment initiative. In April 1980, the private, nonprofit, child and family services agency opened its first family model group home in Bedford, Indiana. The Bedford home was built with funds from a Lilly Endowment grant on a parcel of land donated by Dr. John Pless.
The Villages has grown exponentially during its 28-year history, from one group home in Bedford to more than 20 offices located strategically throughout Indiana. The Villages is now a provider of a wide array of child and family services.
Karl Menninger believed that abused, abandoned or neglected children should have the best opportunity to grow and flourish within a family. To that end, Dr. Menninger's vision remains a part of every program and service of The Villages.
Love cures people, both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.
—Dr. Karl Menninger
