Don't Lash Out at Your Child: 10 Ways to Stay in Control
The next time everyday pressures build up and you feel like lashing out at your child - STOP! Prevent Child Abuse America offers the following alternatives:
- Take a deep breath and remember that you are the adult.
- Imagine you're hearing what your child is about to hear.
- Press your lips together and count to 10...or, better yet, 20.
- Have your child take a time out. The length of time should be one minute for each year of age.
- Take your own time out. Think about what made you angry. Is it something your child did or are you taking unrelated anger out on him or her?
- Call a friend.
- If you can find someone to watch your child, go out for a walk.
- Take a hot bath. If that's not possible, splash cold water on your face.
- Turn on some music. Sing along.
- Call for prevention information: 1-800-CHILDREN.
