PCAI Goes Electronic
Welcome to the first edition of Cherishing Children – a news and information resource from Prevent Child Abuse Indiana (PCAI). This is just one very exciting outcome made possible through the collaboration of PCAI and
The Villages. As of July 1, 2007, PCAI became a Division of The Villages. This partnership will strengthen and sustain the critical mission of both organizations, and will provide additional resources and support to the children and families of Indiana.
The protection of Indiana’s most precious resource – our children – has never been more critical! At least once a week, a Hoosier child dies of abuse or neglect. This grim reality serves to strengthen Prevent Child Abuse Indiana’s resolve to work diligently as a VOICE for Indiana’s children – identifying evidence-based prevention programs, promoting early childhood initiatives and demanding public policy priorities that embrace and support children and their parents.
We welcome your feedback, ideas and suggestions for our new quarterly e-newsletter: Cherishing Children. If you have an event, activity or parenting tip you would like to share with our readers, please send us an e-mail.
Thank you for reading. More importantly, thank you for Cherishing Children!

PCAI Program Profile: Nurturing Fathers
Children need their fathers ... Fathers need their children. That message was reinforced with 10 men who participated in the Nurturing Fathers program. Their purpose for participating was to be a better father once they are released from the Edinburgh Correction Facility later this year.
For 13 weeks these fathers explored their feelings, learned discipline alternatives and the importance of being in their children's lives, and were helped to overcome anger, substance abuse and stress issues. Each proudly graduated from the program on Jan. 12.
What did they learn?
- "I learned to listen to my kids."
- "I've learned to be patient with my kids."
- "The class changed my whole perception and outlook on life – not just as a father, but as a man."
- "I've always known there was a good person inside of me – this class helped that good person come out."

Prevent Colds from Spreading
Children catch a cold an average of six to 10 times per year. During the winter months when kids spend more time indoors, the spread of germs in schools and day care centers greatly increases. Try these easy tips for keeping your whole family healthy during the cold and flu season.
- Wash hands for at least 20 seconds, teach kids by singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice while washing
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth without washing your hands first
- Sneeze and cough into a tissue or the crook of your elbow
- Regularly wash toys that are shared by children
- Be sure everyone gets plenty sleep, exercises and eats a healthy diet.
