The Cost of Child Abuse and Neglect in the United States
Prevent Child Abuse America recently released a comprehensive study of the total annual financial cost of child abuse and neglect in the United States. The study, funded by The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, produced staggering numbers. Here are some of the results:
The direct costs of child abuse and neglect (hospitalization, cost to the welfare system, judicial proceedings, etc) total over $24,000,000,000.
- The cost of hospitalization alone comes to over $6 billion.
- The cost to the welfare system totals over $14 billion.
- The indirect costs (adult criminality, lost future productivity, etc.) total over $69,000,000,000.
- The total estimate of the annual cost of child abuse and neglect in the U.S. comes to $94,076,882,529.
